Create an Accounting CV that stands out from the Crowd

As a finance recruiter, accountants ask me how to make their CV's stand out from the crowd when applying for "that right job". My answer remains the same as it has for the last 25 years. Your CV shouldn't just detail your capabilities but also be about you. As the initial contact and representation of you with that prospective employer, it needs to tell a compelling story of why they should be interested in who you are.

There are many ways to achieve this but notably a profile paragraph must be tailored to that company. I repeatedly see people talking about how passionate they are about certain things which are often totally irrelevant to that application. For example a desire to work in a sector different to the one of the company for which are applying won't do you any favours! A required skill of good finance person is about attention to detail and laziness in your CV don't kick off a client review very well.

If you don't have room for a paragraph because you want to keep it to the 2 pages for instance, then write a good cover letter. Look at the company and see what they stand for. When applying for jobs, working culture is one of the most important things candidates talk about as being an area they must identify with to be willing to accept a job and be happy. Look at websites that describe what it is like to work there (e.g. Glassdoor) and quote their figures if they are a strong employer.

Look at the company and comment on a recent staff event they had citing it as a company you can identify with. No need to go overboard but it does show you have done some homework!

So if you want your CV to be the 1 in 10 that goes to the YES pile, make a little effort. Getting a quality application in which will be noticed is less hard work than sending out more and more CV's in the hope that some mud will stick.
