I posted a CIPD report last week which highlighted that more than one quarter of UK companies who had hired in the last year had been "ghosted". This phenomenon is when an employee who has accepted a role doesn't turn up on day 1 of their new job.
There can be many reasons for this some legit, but the simple fact of workers not communicating the intention of not starting the new role can be hugely detrimental to companies who have expended time and resource (=money) in the recruitment process only to be let down. It can impact in handovers and knowledge transfers not taking place as well as being highly unprofessional.
One of the advantages of using a recruitment agency is that they manage the candidate cradle to grave through the recruitment process. The experienced/good agencies continue to work with clients and candidates (eg ensuring contracts are signed and returned). All parties are kept in the loop and any issues during onboarding are addressed before they can become an obstacle to the candidate starting the new employment.
If you are an employer who has been ghosted and you recruit directly, perhaps it is worth considering who is responsible within the company for fulfilling this vital role of Keeping In Touch and avoiding being "ghosted".
Or if you are using an agency, check with them what their procedures are and how they can help you with onboarding. The good agencies do more for their fee than you might realise!
